WHITTIER, Los Angeles County — Whittier’s Greenway Trail is a multi-use path through residential, commercial and industrial portions of the city. According to the city’s FAQ, the route opened in January 2009 on a former railroad right-of-way.
The city describes the original five-mile trail beginning near the I-605 freeway, running generally parallel to Whittier Boulevard, passing through the Painter Avenue/Lambert Road area and reaching Mills Avenue.
Can cyclists use it?
The city describes it as a bicycle and pedestrian trail. Users should follow posted right-of-way and safety rules, especially where the path meets city streets or traffic crossings.
What about proposed extensions?
The city’s FAQ discusses hopes of extending the corridor toward the city limits and connecting with Orange County. That historical planning discussion is not evidence that an extension is funded, built or open as of November 2026.
Visitors should verify current access points and any temporary construction or maintenance closure with Whittier Public Works. The city lists (562) 567-9500 for further trail information.
Because the path crosses multiple neighborhoods, readers should not assume every segment offers parking, drinking water, restrooms or night lighting. Carry water and choose routes appropriate for daylight and conditions.
